It was a hot morning on the 23rd of October but 7 scouts, 1 cub
and 2 parents still met at the Pamphlet Sea Scout den for a trip out to see
the natural bridge and the glowworms. At 1:30 we set off thanks to our
drivers Melinda Wilkinson and Frances Watt. After a long and hilly trip we
arrived at 3:00 pm at the Natural Bridge. We had an afternoon tea of
chocolate cookies, apple juice and fruit before setting out in the day light
to see the natural arch and the waterfall. The air wasn’t as hot in the
shade of all the rainforest trees you could hear the sound of the waterfall.
(The waterfall was flowing well thanks to all the rain.) The view was
fantastic. We went down into the cool, dark cave and had a breath of the
moisture, earthy air before heading back up to the picnic ground.
Unfortunately the 2nd half of the circuit had been cut off due to a fallen
tree. We played some games (bees around the honey pot, fold over) before we
were hit by a sprinkle of rain.

We quickly jumped under the table while the sprinkle passed (about 30
seconds). The preparation of dinner had started and the smell of cooking
mince and onion filled the air. We ate dinner at 5:30. Mmmmmm… I like
hamburgers. For dessert we enjoyed lamingtons and chocolate biscuits. We
played an enjoying game of charades while we waited for the sun to set. When
it was dark we switched on our torches and prepared headed off. A ranger
gave us a talk before we left. She told us that we had come at a lucky time
of year.

The
glow worms had only just come out and that there was a rare colony of fire
flies in the area. She also told us to look out for green tiger-eye frogs,
as they were very common at the moment. After saying bye to the ranger we
set out on our walk. The sound frogs croaking filled the air (Now I know
what the ranger meant about frogs being common) as we moved down the track.
Fireflies flickered on and off above our heads (That must’ve been the
colony). Finally we reached the cave. The roof of the cave was like the
night sky filled with twinkling stars. We stumbled around randomly bumping
into people. We stood there for ages gazing at the ceiling before heading
back up.
It was time to
head home. We sleepily got into the cars and started the drive home. On the
way home we almost ran over a very panic-stricken ringtail possum.
THE END
