On Saturday the 22nd to Tuesday 25th of September the
scout section set off on the annual sail camp. With eight sailboats and two
powerboats in tow there was a great turnout. The wind and weather was great on
the Saturday.

On Saturday we left the den at 9:30am and hit the water at
Jacobs Well by 11:30am. The crews and to much delight we set off sailing to The
Bedroom to camp for the first night. There were two capsizes and the Coastguard
even had to take some of the scouts across to the campsite as the weather had
grown dark and gloomy. The campsite was set-up just in time for the rain. Once
the rain cleared scouts walked to the sand-dunes and had loads of fun jumping
down them. After the storm it had grown cold and windy. We went to bed after
dinner and hot chocolates. Bernie cut his finger on the first night while
preparing dinner. The next morning most of the scouts walked across to see the
sunrise. We packed up camp and set off for the second campsite on Russell Island
across from Canaipa Point.

The lasers and TT were towed to Whalleys Gutter. The boats
were rigged and we hit the water for the second time in one day. All the small
boats capsized within 1 minute of each other. We were then towed all the way to
the second campsite. We arrived at the second campsite by about 11:00am. The
luggage was unloaded and many scouts got stuck in the mud. The camp was set-up
and hamburgers were cooked for lunch. The scouts used used the afternoon to
explore the island and walk up the mountain.

On day three, scouts went donuting with Waringa and Jack.
Lunch was cooked and eaten. In the afternoon the scouts went walking, swimming
and sailing. The wind was very strong and Lewis went sailing with Theo and
capsized 10 times. Waringa taught sailing skills in the grouper and Iain took
some scouts out in the scruffy. She sailed beautifully until the mast and
side-stays broke. We all walked up the mountain to watch the sunset, it was
beautiful. That night we sat around the camp fire and sang campfire songs and
performed skits. We also learnt some of the older scout campfire songs from
Waringa and Iain. After the campfire we dug holes and put Cameron and Theo in
them and watched them struggle free. While Cameron was immobilized Emily drew on
his face, with great complaint from Cameron.

On the last morning the campsite was packed
up and loaded into the boats. We set-off to Redland Bay and nobody was towed as
the wind was perfect for sailing. We stopped at the north tip of Karragarra
Island for lunch and then headed off again Isabel and Maddy were sailing the
Ullyses and the wind became too strong for them and mast collapsed and made a
hole in the boat. The Ullyses was then towed the rest of the trip. Parents
picked us up around 2:00pm and we put the boats on their trailers. We then
travelled to MacDonald's. We back at the den at 4:00pm and were cleaned up by
5:00pm ready to go home and relax.

The sail camp was a great success and all the new scouts
thoroughly enjoyed the trip. We travelled in excess of 40kms and everyone loved
the camp.
