Canoe/Kayak Anchor Badge Course - Level I/II Information Sheet (+Level 2 Test Day)

Scope of Activity: The course is designed to provide a novice canoeist with the necessary skills and sound grounding in the principals of canoeing / kayaking that will allow the individual to participate with a high degree of safety and confidence in any general or expedition canoeing / kayaking.
 
Venue: Tidal estuaries - You will be Canoeing on the Canoe Reach of the Brisbane River (adjacent to Graceville/Tennyson) and on Oxley Creek

Activity open to: Scouts/Venturers/Rovers/Leaders. Minimum age of participants 11 years.
 
Cost:
bullet$55.00 – Full live in course Friday through to Sunday - the course must be attended in its entirety - Includes meals and accommodation (personal sleeping equipment inc sleeping mat needed).

Payment Requirements: A "Master List” of all participants – youth members, leaders must be completed and returned along with all fees ($55) to Pamphlett Sea Scout Group c/o PO Box 345 Inala Town Centre, Inala Qld 4077 a full ten working days prior to the event.
 
Prerequisites: Prior to arriving at the course all participants will have :
bulletKnowledge of all Boating and Safety Rules as set out in P & R and Queensland Branch Policies and Procedures.
bulletFirst Aid Qualifications - Youth: Be able to demonstrate how to stop bleeding, how to treat shock, the dangers of exposure to cold and the sun, a knowledge of the treatment for marine stingers and EAR/CPR.
bulletFirst Aid Qualifications Adults: Provide a photocopy of current Senior First Aid Certificate with current Resuscitation endorsement.
bulletSwimming – Youth – Be able to swim 50 meters fully clothed wearing a PFD.
bulletSwimming Adults – be able to swim 100 meters fully clothed wearing a PFD
bulletKnots – All participants must be able to tie and state the use of the following knots:
bulletBowline
bulletSheet bend
bulletFigure of eight - single, on the bite and returned
bulletRolling Hitch on a standing line
bulletRound turn and two half hitches
bulletHunters bend
bulletHighwayman’s hitch
bulletCleat hitch
Parking: Parking facilities are available at the centre for the duration of the course but vehicle owners do so at their own risk.
 
Personal Requirements: All youth members must bring C4 (Parent consent form), signed by either Parent and or Guardian. Leaders will need to complete a "Leader Training Application Form – A15". 

Should youth members be attending as a group with their Leader then the Leaders will be also be responsible for obtaining their own "Activity Advice and Approval – C5".

NOTE: No signed C4 (Parent consent forms) or A15, no activity participation.

bulletCanoeing Clothes – shorts, long sleeve shirt with collar – no swimming costumes.
bulletSpare change of Clothes – for use in and around the centre.
bulletEnclosed shoes i.e. sandshoes, wet shoes – (NO HIKING BOOTS) – that can get wet and very muddy.
bulletSecond pair of shoes (enclosed) for use at the centre when off the water – Thongs not allowed.
bulletWind jacket / Jumper.
bulletRaincoat or rain jacket.
bulletWater bottles.
bulletWaterproof torch.
bulletSleeping bag, sleeping mat pyjama's and pillow – sleeping on floor.

bulletPersonal Safety Line – 10 metre length, minimum diameter of 6mm, preferable synthetic with an eye spice in one end and sailors makers whipping on the other.

Registration and Times:
bulletRegistration will commence from 7.30pm – Friday night
bulletOpening Parade Friday Night – Full Uniform – 8.15pm
bulletFinal Parade Sunday – Full Uniform – 3.30pm

Please Note! During the course of the weekend all participants are required to assist with the washing down and safe storage of all equipment used on the course – NO EXCEPTIONS.

Canoe/Kayak Anchor Badge Level II Test Day Information Sheet 

 
Scope of Activity: The test day has been designed as a half day exercise for the participant to demonstrate to the instructor that they are competent paddlers. 

The participant must demonstrate a wide range of skill and a higher level of performance than at Anchor Badge Level 1 and have a greater understanding of the responsibility of being in charge of the craft. 

The successful participant will demonstrate a competent, safe, practical approach to the paddling and other elements of proficiency as stated in QBAC Policies and Procedures.
 

Venue: Meet at the Twin Bridges near Fernvale on the Brisbane River dressed ready to go canoeing / kayaking – no uniform required. 

You will be Canoeing / Kayaking at Twin Bridges near Fernvale on the Brisbane River.
 

Activity open to: Scouts / Venturer Scouts / Rovers and Leaders who have their level 1 and wish to achieve their Level Two Canoe / Kayaking Anchor Badge Certificate and have completed eight (8) additional hours in charge of a canoe or kayak – log books required.

This is an ideal opportunity for Leaders wanting reaccreditation of existing Certificate – Leaders will need to bring along your Water Activities Log Book and First Aid Certificate.

MINIMUM AGE 11 YEARS.

No log book, No test, No Certificate (First Aid Cert. for Leaders).
